Faced with a tired old front garden that comprised of a small raised bed, with a sad lawn below that, we opted for a radical rethink. Out came the lawn, and everything in the raised bed came out bar two established Cordylines. Using them as inspiration, we designed a planting scheme using mainly New Zealand natives. This helped to incorporate the Cordylines into the bed, and make them appear like they belonged. We replaced the lawn with a planting bed, and then mulched the whole thing with Black Basalt chippings to help reduce the amount of maintenance, but to also give a natural feel to the beds.
